The Javan ferret badger occurs on the Indonesian island of Java. For a long time considered to be a subspecies of Burmese ferret badger, this species is now regarded as its own species. However, due to the morphological similarities between all four species of Melogale, and due to no thorough taxonomic study, it is hard to truly place these animals into species without a better understanding of their relation to one another.
